Daily painting practice - how I check a flower painting

Marigolds - work still in progress
( needs a real title)
8"x8"
oil on masonite

There are many times I sign a painting only to find out afterwards that it needs more work. That's why it is a great practice to have a few ways to crtique and check the work.

One way is to turn the painting upside down. This helps you spot problems with the drawing and it gives you a different perspective to see how the light falls across the form.

Another check is to look at the painting in a mirror. This reverses the image, now everything on the right side is viewed on the left. Does the composition still hold up?

I also like to take a photo and check the progress without color.

Now that I showed you what I have checked. Can you spot the areas I need to go back in and fix or touch up?

Great ideas. I've only used the mirror reverse before.

In the black and white the flower values seem too similar. Also it almost looks like the jar might topple over to the left from the weight of the flowers. Even though the foliage on the left helps to balance it try taking out the flower bud on the right. I like the bud so where could that go elsewhere?

Your marigolds are lovely, I think they must be very difficult flowers to paint. I've used the upside down and reverse methods of looking at artwork, have never tried the black & white photo to check value, this is the most surprising one! I wouldn't have thought the yellow and orange were so close in value. Thank you for taking the time to demonstrate these!

thanks for sharing your checking tips. The jar looks skewed/slanted to one side instead of symmetrical.
Nice painting, as always. :)

I also Just noticed what Celeste commented about the jar. That should be a better fix for the flowers wanting to topple out and you can keep the bud in there.

Sympathy and empathy for your gout problems.... I have been fighting it for over 10 years....

I found your list of artist/gout sufferers most interesting. I thought mine was related to my being too heavy and hereditary from my father....

Do you suppose there is a paint link also?

Your paintings are lovely!
Congratulations on the Sante Fe show!

Your jar is lopsided. That's the only thing I'd worry about. Good luck
