Daily Painting Practice- Maine Morning lobster boat

Day 27 - An early Commute

I thought about putting this one on video but never got around to it.

The idea in the thumbnail sketch was very simple - still water around an island. I had the sketch in the sketchbook for a while but the idea of how to paint it came together for me while listening to the Peer Gynt Suite by Edvard Grieg on Pandora. A still, quiet morning on the water in Maine. What could be more peaceful?
from thumbnail to color study
Per yesterday's post -. try to  strike the idea onto the canvas right from the beginning.. In this case a shaft of early morning light and calm water. I almost changed the subject to a tall ship instead of an island.

quiet water
I knew the colors were going to be muted except for the light of the sunrise.

where to go from here?
I wasn't sure where to go with the painting. So when in doubt...

Morning Commute

...throw in a lobster boat.
