I ventured outside again last week to try and do some plein air studies for larger studio pieces. I didn't get much accomplished though. I was at the Boyer Chute Nature Wildlife Refuge 12 miles north of Omaha in Fort Calhoun, Nebraska. It was a very overcast day that eventually turned dark and rained and rained and rained.
The terrain here makes me think of the Netherlands. One of my favorite blogs on plein air painting is (Rene Plein Air). Rene's work is a great inspiration. There are two other plein air artist/bloggers that I like. (Rob Ijbema) paints in Wales and (Ed Terpening) paints out west and California. I admire these three guys because they have the fortitude to keep painting in any climate and still find and paint the beauty that surrounds us all.

The overcast day didn't give the painting a lot of drama. It does reflect the sense I had that day. I was the only one in the 4,000 acre park.

Wow, great painting, Peter. Wonderful subtlty in it, expanding composition. You're getting the hang of this quickly!
BTW, I will be in Lincoln for my nephew's graduation June 8-11. You're in a gallery in Lincoln, right? Would love to see more of your work.
Indeed a great one, Nice light in the back, even far far away on the hillsides. Somehow I hope that are little sticks or sand that's blown on you painting but I think those are birds.
Thanks very much for the nice words btw.
i'm glad rene send me here, that is a goood plein air peter, nice seize too, moody like nebraska(springsteen, another dutch name)love the sense of air, look forward to more like these.
AMAZING painting Pete!
It looks like a continuation of your photos, almost like a movie...
Hi Peter . . .It's good to see you back! Great painting! Since jumping into the painting a day scene, I have been watching your site with great interest. Keep up the good work! And . . .I totally agree with you about these other painters, they are terrific!
A wonderful landscape Peter and I think there is drama in that big overcast sky. The colours are perfect. Yes it is reminiscent of the Netherlands and of Belgium where my daughter lives.
Peter,
Nice job! But you know I love your style...especially since I own one of yours.
Love that you made the sky so big....very dramatic.
Glad you're back from break!
Kay
Very Nice Peter!
I have never been to the state of Nebraska, but this is how I envisioned it to look. This is interesting to watch you move outdoors. I make a point to do it weekly, natural light has taught me a lot.
