Self Portrait - Day 5
9"x12"
oil on canvas board

I love these fast oil sketches. They can either come out surprisingly well and have a fresh look to them, or they totally bomb and you are left searching for some redeeming quality. You may end up telling yourself things like "the background color is nice".

I am pleased with this one. If I had more time I would keep refining it, especially things like the color and tones...and the drawing... and the brush work.... But for a quick study I kind of like it...I even look thinner.

I agree with you that you stopped in exactly the right place. It is very fresh... and it looks exactly like you.

I look forward to more of your self-portraits. A great practice and challenge. I also like David Leffel.. had the pleasure of meeting him last summer. He had a life-size self-portrait in his studio. It was amazing!

I have always wanted to paint but never had the confidence with using paint ..just started creative painting classes so hopefully that will all change now. fingers crossed... Anyway, thanks again for sharing your work with us. I am very much looking forward to seeing your next 25 paintings. :o)
Kind regards

Thanks Celeste- Stopping is one of the hardest parts...especially when doing a self portrait. There is always room for improvement.

Pam- Yes, David is such an inspiration. I have a lot of his books. They are always laying around the studio somewhere.

Welcome Shirl- Just jump into the painting. We all start the same way( afraid) but the fun is in the trying.

Thanks Cheryl- My moods are many especially when trying to figure out what to paint next.
