More progress shots of the Northern Woods painting. This shot gives you an idea of the size of the canvas. Slow going but steady progress is the best way forward, I suppose. I find when I am not sure of how I should attempt to paint something I either fiddle with it with a tiny brush or I go too dark or too thick too fast with a big brush. There is no in between for fearful painters.
The important thing is to not give up and not to rush any area of the painting. I have a long way to go but I can see the light at the end of the canvas.
This is a 5"x7" experimental portrait study. I only used 3 colors. White, Ultra Marine Blue and Burnt Sienna. The limited palette reminded me of Wyeth's work.... The comparison stops there.
I also used the palette knife just for fun, to apply the white. This was not the most successful painting but it was a great learning experience. You should never be afraid to try things that are outside your comfort zone. What's the worst that can happen? If it doesn't look like you ... say it was a painting of your cousin.

Wow!...how do you get your water to look so real??? Like I said before..I'm just a learner, but being an artist has been my dream since I was little. 1 husband & 4 kids later I'm finally getting around to doing something about it...& loving every minute of it!!!
Really love your paintings!...you are very talented !!! (<~secretly hoping someone will say that to me one day ;o> )

I am really enjoying your self portrait series Peter. These last two are terrific in terms of colour choices and simple design features. Have you been working from life or did you get someone to take some pics of you? Whatever, they have real presence.
I've been checking out your self-portrait project over the past couple of weeks, and I have really enjoyed it. Our styles are extremely different, but here's the address to my blog if you want to add a link.

Thanks, and I look forward to the rest of the self-portraits!
Pete, We continue to excitedly check out your blog every day awaiting each new entry. This latest one using just three colors is truly remarkable. We are in awe of your talent and also your remarkable ability to make us smile with your wit. It is such an honor to own 2 original Yesis's!

Thank you Shirl- Keep at it! Painting is is a great way to enjoy the beauty around you.
Hi Sheila- I have done all of these so far from Photos I have taken myself using a remote button (like a tv remote) for my camera. I'll try to do some from life but some of the ideas I have make that impossible.
Thanks Randy - I'll link you up when I get the chance.
OH Carole - thank you so much. It is a real joy knowing those paintings hang in your home.
Whatever brushes you are using are working well. This is a beautiful painting.
Wow. I am so happy to find your blog.
How inspiring, a self portrait a day. A very talented man told me to (if you don't have a model, use the mirror and paint yourself).
Your work is amazing!
